Regional, continental, bilateral, international and multilateral actors each play a crucial role in responding terrorist threats, crises, and armed conflicts across Africa. Amid a landscape of evolving threats, protracted armed conflicts, and the continent’s rising geopolitical significance, the number of actors and institutions that seek to enable and assist African institutions manage and mitigate conflict is increasing. In addition to the United Nations and the African Union, and the Regional Economic Communities, ad-hoc coalitions, military contractors, and external actors are deeply involved in providing counterterrorism, crisis response and conflict mitigation efforts across Africa.
By focusing on the security challenges facing Africa and the regional responses to terrorism, crisis, and conflict, the Africa Center for Strategic Studies has long played a role in catalyzing strategic solutions to the continent’s regional and transnational security challenges. ACSS efforts have focused specifically on advancing African-led strategies and approaches to address shared security challenges.
Program objectives have included:
- Assessing the security environment and the region’s capacity to response to terrorism, crisis and conflict.
- Advancing bilateral and regional coordination to respond to critical security challenges.
- Providing recommendations for more effective regional, continental, and international partnerships.
- Advancing recommendations and frameworks to improve Africa’s regional security architecture.
