In May 2022, more than twenty Botswanan Africa Center alumni gathered with Africa Center faculty and staff and U.S. embassy officials at the Protea Hotel in Gaborone to share a lively discussion on the topic of “Youth in Africa.” This event was significant because it marked the first in-person engagement with alumni of the Africa Center following a hiatus of over one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After a warm and joyful welcome by Ms. Luisa Chau, Africa Center Regional Engagement Manager, the guests enjoyed remarks by Lieutenant Colonel Jacob Abrami, U.S. Army Attaché, and presentations by Dr. Joel Amegboh, Africa Center Assistant Professor for African Security Studies, and Ms. Tshenolo Omphitlhetse, Director of the Department of National Service and Internship of the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture in Botswana. After dinner, attendees were encouraged to take center stage and share their thoughts about the current issues facing Botswanan youth. Special thanks to both Brigadier General Bruce Thobane and Colonel Batlhatlosi Carlos Phejana for the support and assistance in making this engagement a successful one.
