Program Overview

The Africa Center is pleased to be hosting a webinar titled “The Space Domain and Africa’s Security Landscape,” extending an invitation to all Africa Center alumni, partners, communities of interest, and stakeholders within the U.S. government. This webinar will explore the security implications of increased human activity in space, the space domain’s importance to terrestrial security, and avenues for collaboration and alignment with U.S. values and interests.

In 2023, nearly twenty-five years after the first African-built satellite, SUNSAT, was launched into space, the African Union launched the African Space Agency (AfSA). Since SUNSAT, 55 satellites from nearly twenty African nations have been launched into orbit. Increasingly, the space domain has emerged as a national imperative in countries across the continent. As more African nations develop space programs, with particular interest in the commercial aspect of this domain, it necessitates a discussion over the long-term security implications of space domain development.
