Chercheur associé
Le Dr. Mark Duerksen est chercheur associé au Centre d’études stratégiques de l’Afrique. Ses recherches portent sur l’urbanisation sans précédent de l’Afrique et sur les problèmes et opportunites qui en decoulent en matière de sécurité. Le Dr. Duerksen suit de près le Nigeria, dont la population urbaine est la plus importante d’Afrique, ainsi qu’à son histoire politique et urbaine. Ayant une formation d’historien, il a une connaissance approfondie des dynamiques foncières, sociales, de développement et de gouvernance qui contribuent aux tensions et conflits actuels à l’intérieur et autour des villes du continent.
Le Dr. Duerksen travaille sur plusieurs projets pour le CESA y compris le suivi des nouvelles et des tendances stratégiques liées à la sécurité, et la création de cartes analytiques et d’infographies permettant de visualiser les profils spatiaux et les précédents historiques. Ses cartes de Lagos ont reçu plusieurs récompenses. Il s’est servi de l’analyse spatiale pour examiner la progression de l’épidémie du virus Ébola en Sierra Leone et l’évolution historique des réseaux de transport d’Afrique. Il a suivi une formation sur les systèmes d’information géographiques (GIS) et la rédaction de divers documents sur l’art et l’architecture africaines.
Le Dr. Duerksen est titulaire d’un doctorat en histoire africaine de l’Université d’Harvard et d’une licence sur la pensée sociale et politique de l’Université de Virginie. Sa thèse sur l’histoire de l’écologie, du logement et de la politique à Lagos a été financée par une bourse Boren (Programme de formation sur la sécurité nationale) et une bourse Frederick Sheldon (Harvard). Auparavant, il a enseigné au Hunter College à New York et à l’African School of Economics du Bénin.
