U.S. Army Brigadier General James D. Owens and African Security Sector Leaders Meet to Discuss Leadership and Ethics at ACSS Program

James D. Owens, Jr.On March 21, 2013, Brigadier General James D. Owens, Jr., Deputy Commanding General, U.S. Army Africa, met with 41 African security sector professionals attending the 2013 Next Generation of African Security Sector Leaders Course to discuss responsibilities shared by both civilian and military leaders in the security sector. The three-week program, which ran through March 22, focused on enhancing competence, ethics and leadership in African militaries. Brig. General Owens stressed the need for professional military leadership to assist democratic governance by offering adequate training. He also shared his own experiences with leadership, ethics and critical decisions made during his career. Finally, General Owens said as leaders in their nations, they must not only focus on the security challenges but security sector leaders must also give time and attention to ensuring the preservation of ethical leadership.
