WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Africa Center for Strategic Studies, located at the campus of the National Defense University at Fort Lesley J. McNair, will welcome 40 African military officers to its 2011 Next Generation of African Military Leaders Course. The four-week program will be conducted February 28 to March 25.

The course will focus on enhancing professionalism, ethics and leadership in the African security sector. Officers will analyze the policy environment within which African leaders deal with development partners; share current concepts on professionalism, ethics and leadership; examine Africa’s contemporary and emerging security threats; and explore best practices for enhancing relations between civilians and the security sector to advance good governance and democracy on the continent.

When:  Tuesday, March 1, 11AM. News media must arrive no later than 10AM in order to clear security.

Who:  Lt. Gen. Derrick Mgwebi of South Africa will speak on threats to Africa’s security.  General Mgwebi will meet with the news media following the question and answer portion of his formal remarks. The Q & A session however will be closed to coverage. Joining General Mgwebi on the dais will be VADM Ann Rondeau, USN, President of the National Defense University, Ambassador William M. Bellamy (ret.), Director of the Africa Center, and Professor Mathurin Houngnikpo, ACSS Chair of Civil-Military Relations.
