Dr. Augustus Vogel joined ACSS in July 2008 as a US Naval Forces Africa (CNE-CNA-C6F) liaison. He develops and implements collaborative civil – military projects for building maritime security in Africa. As a member of ACSS, he supports the Maritime Safety and Security academic agenda.
Prior to coming to ACSS, Dr. Vogel worked in the Office of the Oceanographer of the Navy. Dr. Vogel holds a PhD in Biology from the University of Southern California where he studied fisheries biology and oceanography within an international security context. In his current position, he has combined that academic experience with his Peace Corps and NGO work in Africa to develop maritime security programs focused on illegal fishing, oceanography, meteorology, and coastal erosion. These programs are being implemented through CNE-CNA-C6F’s Africa Partnership Station effort.
Dr. Vogel’s academic area of interest is the development of mechanisms to create holistic maritime security programs in Africa. This includes identification of strategies for collaborations among US and African militaries, the scientific community, NGOs, fisheries management organizations, and other agencies in the US Government, as well as creation of programs which take advantage of the African perspective.
