Dr. Godfrey Musila

Research Fellow

As a research fellow, Godfrey Musila is responsible for conducting policy-relevant research on security challenges facing Africa. His research focuses on international criminal justice, human rights and humanitarian law, the rule of law, maritime security, and civilian oversight, as well as international and African intergovernmental institutions. He speaks regularly on these topics at Africa Center programs, policy seminars, and academic conferences.

Dr. Musila is an attorney with extensive experience in Africa, particularly the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes region. He has researched, designed and reviewed polices, and provided advice or training in several African countries.

Prior to joining the Africa Center, Dr. Musila was Head of Research at the International Nuremberg Principles Academy in Germany. He was principal author of the report of the African Union Commission of Inquiry on South Sudan and currently serves as volunteer on the Human Rights Council’s Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan. Dr. Musila has lectured law in Kenya, South Africa, and Tanzania and served as Director of Research and Policy on the Kenyan Truth Commission. While with the Institute for Security Studies, he trained criminal justice officials in seven countries on the criminal justice approach to countering terrorism.

Dr. Musila holds a Ph.D. in international criminal law from the University of the Witwatersrand and earned an M.A. with distinction in human rights law from the University of Pretoria. He received the Nelson Mandela Prize for top LL.M. student and Keba M’baye prize for best dissertation. In 2008, he was a Marie Curie Scholar in international criminal law at the Grotius Center for International Legal Studies at Leiden University. He speaks Swahili, English, French and Portuguese.
