Dr. Wafula Okumu is now based in Addis Ababa, where he works on border issues for the African Union. He previously served as the Head, African Security Analysis Program at the Institute for Security Studies in Pretoria. Dr. Okumu attended the 2003 Senior Leaders Seminar.
Major General Maurice Otieno Oyugi has been appointed Commander of the Kenya Air Force. He previously served as the Deputy Commander of the Kenya Armed Forces. General Oyugi attended the Washington Policy Symposium in 2001. He replaces Major General Harold Tangai who has been appointed Senior Directing Staff at the National Defence College. General Tangai attended the 2011 African Air Chiefs Conference.
Major General Jackson Ndungu Waweru has been appointed Commandant of the Defence Staff College. He previously served as the Deputy Commander of the Kenya Air Force. General Waweru attended the 2007 Senior Leaders Seminar.
Kenya’s President Mwai Kibaki has promoted Major General Njuki Mwaniki to the rank Kenya of Lieutenant General and appointed him Army Commander of the Kenya Armed Forces.
Lieutenant Colonel Aphaxard Kiugu has been promoted to the rank of Colonel and appointed Defence Advisor for the Permanent Mission of Kenya to the United Nations. He previously served as the Commanding Officer, Armoured Unit for the Kenya Defense Forces. Colonel Kiugu participated in the Next Generation of African Military Leaders course in 2008.
Brigadier General George Kyaka has been promoted to the rank of Major General and appointed Commander, Western Command. He previously served as Assistant Chief of the General Staff in Charge of Operations, Training and Plans at the Kenya Defense Headquarters. General Kyaka attended the Senior Leader Seminar in 2005.
Defence Force Sergeant Major Joseph M. Kithome has been promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer 1. He attended the Africa Command Joint Warrant Officer/Sergeant Major Symposium in 2010 and 2011.
