Regional Offices

In 2003, the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy tasked the Director of the Africa Center to develop a course of action to establish an Africa Center presence in Africa. In September 2004, the Africa Center recommended establishing four “Africa Center Regional Offices,” with Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the site of the first Regional Office. The Principal Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, on July 11, 2005, directed the Africa Center to begin planning for the establishment of the initial Regional Office. The Addis Ababa Regional Office was inaugurated on October 26, 2006. In November 2008, the Africa Center’s second Regional Office was opened in Dakar, Senegal.

The Regional Offices establish a long-term and visible Africa Center presence on the continent. Specifically, the Regional Offices help strengthen relationships with African governments, international organizations, the African Union and subregional organizations, and other partner institutions across the continent. The Regional Offices build outreach programs and provide support for ACSS Community Members and organized Community Chapters. They plan and execute ACSS activities in support of ACSS headquarters and host governments. In addition, the Regional Offices foster strong working ties with African defense, military, and civic leaders in order to advance common policy objectives.
