Col. Andrew Olson

Senior Military Advisor

As senior military advisor, Colonel Andrew Olson provides counsel and recommendations to the Africa Center on military operations and U.S. defense cooperation in Africa.

Col. Olson received his commission as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry in 1990 on graduation from the United States Military Academy at West Point. His assignments include multiple joint tours and staff assignments at numerous levels on four continents. Some of the highlights include security cooperation program manager for Africa at U.S. European Command, senior defense official and defense attaché in Mozambique, North and West Africa division chief Strategic Plans and Policy Directorate J5 at the Joint Staff, and deputy security assistance officer at the Office of Defense Representative-Pakistan.

Colonel Olson’s military education includes completion of the Infantry Officer Basic and Advance courses, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and U.S. Army War College. He also holds an M.A. from the Naval Postgraduate School.

His awards and badges include the Defense Superior Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Defense Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, the Expert Infantryman Badge, the Parachutist Badge, and the Ranger Tab.
