2010:
Kenya’s President Mwai Kibaki has promoted Major General Njuki Mwaniki to the rank of Lieutenant General and appointed him Army Commander of the Kenya Armed Forces.
General Mwaniki first became associated with the Africa Center in 2004, when he participated in the Senior Leader Seminar (SLS). He went on to serve as President of the Kenya community chapter, known locally as the Kenya Center for Strategic Studies.
In the ensuing years, General Mwaniki also has provided insight and leadership while serving in roles ranging from participant and facilitator to guest speaker and curriculum review member at the SLS, Security Challenge of Small Arms and Light Weapons Proliferation in Africa Topical Seminar, Managing Security Resources in Africa Seminar, Community Leadership Conference, and chapter reunions.
Mr. Salim M. Salim was recently appointed Second Counsellor to the Kenya Mission to the United Nations. He previously served as the Second Counsellor, International Organizations and Conferences Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nairobi. Mr. Salim participated in the Africa Center’s Small Arms and Light Weapons Workshop in August 2008.
June 2009:
Colonel Andrew Oboch Nyandong has been promoted to the rank of Brigadier General. He participated in the Golden Spear program in July 2001.
Major General Maurice Otieno Oyugi has been promoted to Commander, Eastern Command for the Kenya Army. He previously served as Director of Logistics. Major General Oyugi attended the Washington Policy Symposium in May 2001.
September 2008:
Dr. Monica Juma, seven-time ACSS facilitator, will serve on a new joint panel set up to support African Union peacekeeping missions established under a United Nations mandate. “The Panel will consider lessons from past and current African Union peacekeeping efforts and explore possible options to enhance the predictability, sustainability and flexibility of resources for African Union peacekeeping operations mandated by the Security Council,” according to a press release issued by the United Nations.
