Numerous objections to border demarcations, rising threats to the 1.3 million southern Sudanese living in northern Sudan, and the dissolution of joint-integrated military units pose significant conflict flashpoints between north and south Sudan. Managing such triggers is further complicated by rising tensions within South Sudan’s dominant ruling political party, which has sought to closely control and direct sub-national elections.
