Ebode is the president of the Africa Center Community Chapter in Cameroon. He is also the Dean of the University of Yaounde II. The event was an Africa Center Topical Outreach Program (TOPS) held Nov. 11 in Yaounde. The topics selected by the Chapter were “Developing a National Security Strategy,” “Piracy,” and “Highway Robbers.”
Mr. Clifford H. Bernath, Director for Community Outreach and Public Affairs at the Africa Center, presented the first topic regarding the importance of a National Security Strategy. He was followed by Colonel Pierre Djonmkam, who talked about Maritime Piracy on the Cameroonian Coast; and by Colonel Abba Yagana Matapa, who discussed Highway Banditry.
There are 22 community chapters (Africa Center alumni associations) in Africa. Under the TOPS program, Africa Center staff visit each of those 22 countries once a year to maintain long-term positive relationships with them and to continue the Africa Center experience of open and frank dialogue on security-related topics of mutual interest to the members, their governments and, the U.S. government.
Following the TOPS event, the chapter held elections for chapter leadership. Ebode, who has led the chapter for the past five years, stepped down from the position. Colonel Gabriel Metogo Atangana, a participant in the Africa Center’s June 2008 Senior Leaders Seminar, was elected president.
